Blog: All American
I’m still trying to catch up on all these shows. I’m up-to-date with The Good Place, haven’t been watching This Is Us, and now I’m trying to get a grip on All American. Which is what brings us here today: let me shed some light on a TV series you probably don’t know about.
All American almost didn’t get a season 2. In fact, I was a little surprised by its renewal. I’ve mentioned this show to a handful of people over the past year and no one has heard of it. The only person who watches it is my girl Karla and that’s because I basically forced her to watch it with me (you’re welcome). I was drawn to this show because it revolves around football. If you know me, you know that I’m a sucker for anything that revolves around sports. Remember the Titans is one of my favorite movies of all time.
This CW show, starring Taye Diggs and Daniel Ezra, is based around NFL player Spencer Paysinger’s high school years. The football star hailed from a rough neighborhood in South Central L.A. but transferred to a school in Beverly Hills to play ball. Eventually, Paysinger makes his way to the NFL and gets himself a Super Bowl ring in 2012. But I won’t get too ahead of myself; that is not what this show is about. All American is about the struggles Paysinger (whose fictional name in the series is Spencer James) faces when he makes that school transfer and how gang violence, racism, and broken families play into his struggles.
This show is great, but the first episode of the second season was a little slow for me. But I think sometimes that’s how the beginning of a new season starts. You know, setting the scene for the drama that will come later. The team is on a high from winning the championship, Layla (Greta Onieogou) is having daddy problems and Coach Baker (Diggs) is facing the fallout of his infidelity. It’s good drama sure, but I’m just waiting for the next game. Or for some more Cody Christian on my screen. Y’all remember Mike Montgomery from Pretty Little Liars? Or Theo from Teen Wolf? Well, homeboy is all grown up and looking fantastic in a jersey.
Actually, the whole cast is a solid ten let’s be honest.
Anyways, the acting is great, the storylines are intriguing and the series has potential for further success. Like I said before, not a lot of people know about this show. I think that’s why it was almost canceled honestly. Not enough viewers? Cut it. There’s no way this show can compare to the great Friday Night Lights but it does have its own charisma. And who doesn’t love a story inspired by true events?
There are NOT enough hours in the day y’all. There’s so much content out there that I want to see but how am I supposed to watch it when I can’t even keep up with what I already watch? Not to mention, I love reading. No, I fucking love reading (sorry for the language but that’s how passionate I am about it). And I haven’t been able to read a book in a hot minute. ALSO- my co-worker has never seen The Vampire Diaries before and might start watching it and it’s making me want to re-watch it. But I ain’t got time for that either and it’s upsetting. Hell, it’s probably good that I don’t have time for that.
